Motorists will get a better deal under changes to parking enforcement announced by the Government and will come into effect in Wales as well.

From the end of March next year a parking supremo will be able to decide if penalties are fair, motorists will get more time to pay and greater standardisation of legislation nationwide. While illegally parked motorists will be able to be fined if caught on camera an appeals process will allow complaints to be reviewed and fines cancelled and penalties will be lowered for minor offences but increased for the worst offenders.
New guidance also requires local authorities use parking enforcement to improve road safety and cut congestion, not make money.

Older motorists are facing the prospect of retests to keep driving.

New measures could be introduced to ensure older motorists are safe when behind the wheel under measures being considered by the Department for Transport.
It has asked the DVLA to produce a consultation paper on options examining how to tighten the medical requirements for drivers over the age of 70. There are presently 1.5 million drivers in Britain aged over 70.
The options for consideration include: Refresher driving courses, asking doctors to assess elderly motorists when they renew their licence and a written test.

Safety gets a green light in the latest hybrid car test carried out for the European New Car Assessment Programme.

The Honda Civic Hybrid is the second environmentally concerned car that Euro NCAP has tested. It tested the Toyota Prius in 2004 which received a five-star score in adult occupant protection and now the Civic Hybrid has picked up four stars for adult and child protection. They also examined the Skoda Fabia and and while the passenger compartment remained stable during the impact, structures in the dashboard presented a risk of injury to the knees and femurs of the driver and passenger, which resulted in an award for four stars.

The map is reaching the end of the road with an increasing number of drivers.

Modern satellite navigation system stakes its claim as the new way to reach a destination, according to a survey by Motorpoint.In the recent poll conducted by the retailer, 72pc of respondents now prefer to use an automated in-car device, rather than navigating with a fold-up road map or paper atlas.
