Volkswagen is replacing its 1.6-litre FSI petrol engine in the Golf, Golf Plus, Jetta, Eos and Passat ranges, with a new 1.4-litre TSI.


A turbocharger boosts power to122 PS – up from 115 for the 1.6-litre FSI engine and is linked to a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG gearbox, giving 30pc more pulling power and up to 44.8mpg, also better than the 1.6 unit with emissions down from 161 to 149gkm.

Honda plans second, cheaper hybrid and is ‘looking at small car for Europe’
Speaking before the Tokyo Motor Show, Honda CEO and president Takeo Fukui has told reporters he is considering a smaller model for Europe than the next-generation Jazz.

The new unit will carry a retail premium of around £150 over the current 1.6-litre FSI; this rises to £175 for the Passat Saloon and Estate models, where the moderate price rise includes the addition of an autohold function for the parking brake which was previously a £50 option.
