Finland's Mikko Hirvonen swept to victory on an eventful Rally of Japan.

It was his second win of the World Rally season and came after favourites team-mate Marcus Gronholm and Citroen’s Sebastien Loeb crashed and retired.

Hirvonen (right and below) started sunday with a 38-second lead and maintained the gap over Citroen's Daniel Sordo, with Ford's Henning Solberg a distant third.

Triple world champion Sebastien Loeb crashed on Saturday and could not coax his car along competitively on the last day, eventually withdrawing with falling oil pressure on the last but one stage.

He remains four points behind championship leader Marcus Gronholm with just two rounds remaining after Gronholm retired on Friday following a crash.
