WRC drops Wales Rally GB from series in 2010

Wales Rally GB will be dropped out of the WRC calendar in 2010 in a major shakeup of the sport. The classic Monte Carlo Rally will be “rested” in 2009 and replaced with the opening round by the Rally of Ireland. But then Ireland and WRGB will be dropped in 2010 before returning the following season. The Monte will rejoin the series in 2010 as the governing body of world motorsport struggles to fit in all countries which want to be included in the global series. The move is a blow to Welsh Assembly Government plans use the event as a marketing tool and publicise the attractions of Wales. It will also affect plans to base other events around the rally, as it has done for a number of years.
