With the final thirteenth stage over on Sunday’s RDP Welsh Rally high up in the hills on the infamous Epynt military ranges it was a day to remember for two Lampeter crews after they took first and second overall on the challenging event.

Melvyn Evans took the oughtright win with Sean Mullally co-driving, Evans was a late entry and used the event as a shakedown for this weekend’s Manx National Rally in the Isle of Man in his new Subaru Impreza S11 WRC (right).

John Dalton / Gwynfor Jones finished runners up a further 1 minute 12 seconds behind in their Darrian T90 GTR (below) they took a 30 second penalty that could not even lose them the silverware putting Lampeter firmly on the map as far as rallying goes.

Others that finished after the long day on the tarmac mountain roads included Bob Fowden / Kevin Lewis in a Subaru Impreza, Nigel Giggard / David Jones took a class win and 7th overall in a Darrian T90.

Thirteenth overall was not at all unlucky for Rob Tout / Dan Holley as they won their class in a Mitsubishi Evo9, just 2.9 seconds behind them was Geoff Kitney / Ken Gibbard in another Mitsibushi who took 2nd in class. John Bray / Lowri James (St Clears ) took a class win in a Darrian T9 after a steady run.

Dewi Price / Gareth Davies finished 38th overall and 3rd in class driving an Escort RS2000. Just one position behind them were Mark Jukes Delyth Brown in a Toyota Corolla who finished 8th in class. The all female crew of Anwen Lloyd / Gwyneira Davies finished 43rd and 3rd in class in the now familiar green MG ZR.

There was also a top class historic entry on the ranges, in category 1 and 2 David Stokes took the win in a Mk1 Escort RS1600, runners up were Neal James / Kevin Jones in another Escort Mk1just 38 seconds behind Stokes.

Category 3 saw Mark Solloway Carmarthen take the win in his mighty Escort Mk2 with Den Golding co-driving the duo left the rest of the field standing with a 2 minute 6 seconds lead, Terry Brown finished as runner up in his Escort Mk2 with Kevin Evans in the passenger seat after a good day’s rallying on probably one of Britain’s most challenging tarmac venues.
