Mixed weather conditions did not prevent a thrilling Quinton rally at the weekend

After a day of mixed weather ranging from bright sunshine in the morning to torrential rain showers in the afternoon, Saturday’s Quinton Stages Rally was a successful event for local competitors on the Llandovery-based forest rally.

Finishing 12th overall and 6th in class was James Belton / Eurig Evans in a Subaru Impreza WRC. Simon Rodgers / Paul Wakely bought the Mitsibishi Lancer EVO 6 home in 16th and took 3rd in class.

Just one position behind them in 17th was Llanddarog’s Terry Brown in his Escort Mk2 who took a class win with Arwel Jenkins from Nantgaredig on the notes (right).
Jenkins must surely be thinking of buying a bigger trophy cabinet soon with all the class wins he has been getting lately.

Iwan Evans with Bronwydd co-driver Gareth Roberts in a Fiesta ST finished 40th and 3rd in class also taking home some silverware, as did Lampeter & DMC members Rob Walters and Michael Gilbey in the Nissan Sunny finishing 57th and 3rd in class on Rob’s only first forest rally stage event.

Neville Jones / Ryland James finished 67th and 15th in class after losing stacks of time when they visited the scenery in the Caeo forest in their GpN Subaru Impreza but luckily with a strong team of local spectators on a rope they got the Subaru pair going on their way again. Another Lampeter & DMC member who made the finish was Paul Jenkins in his Escort with Alan Lloyd on the notes they finished 68th and 3rd in class.

Retirements included Mark Crisp, co-driving for Mellis Charalmbois, when the Subaru caught fire on SS2. Mark Solloway / Den Golding were to retire the ever flamboyant sideways Escort Mk1 when problems with the steering occurred on SS4 in the Caeo forest.

The Rally was won oughtright by Steve Perez when the Vodka Kick entrepreneur bought back his Focus WRC (top & right) to the finish at Llandovery with a lead of 39 seconds ahead of the Hyundai Accent WRC of Get Connected boss Damien Cole who took the runner up spot. Hugh Hunter finished 3rd overall in another Focus WRC but on the same deficit of time as Cole to Perez but with the result then being decided on earlier stage times. Perez defied the conditions to win the Quinton

The North Wales team of Richard Parry-Jones and Sara Price won the N3 Class, despite two punctures.
Their Deepstream Technologies sponsored Fiesta ST 150 posted fastest times against class competitors in three out of the seven mid-Wales stages.
The tough Fiesta was over a minute ahead of the chasers going into the last state, a repeat of Route 60, where the crew changed their second tyre of the day – and still set the top time.
"I really enjoyed this well organised event which is run over the classic Wales Rally GB Epynt stages," said the former Ford boss.
"They are fast, technical, treacherous, and on top of that we had pretty much every variety of weather conditions and gravel surface to deal with, which I relish."
Co-driver Sara, from the Harlech and District Club, was returning to the Quinton where she competed in her first rally just one year ago.
