Sales are up almost a fifth at Motorpoint Newport in the first quarter of 2009.

The car supermarket giant based on the Queensway Meadow Industrial Estate continues to defy the doom and gloom surrounding car retailers in South Wales , posting one of the best quarterly sales figure in its' history - up over 14% between January and March 2009 compared with the same period the previous year.

Ford continue to remain the most popular manufacturer among customers with the Fiesta and Focus the two top sellers in Newport , closely followed by Vauxhall and Volkswagen. Demand for premium saloons from manufacturers such as Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Saab has shown the most dramatic rise - up 35pc, as record numbers of people take advantage of savings of over £10,000 on certain models.

Headed up by Russell Louth, Motorpoint Newport currently sells in excess of 6,000 cars a year from its five acre site and he said, "Motorpoint has enjoyed a record start to 2009 in terms of sales, surpassing even our wildest expectations, with customers travelling from as far afield as Scotland and the Irish Republic to take advantage of the great deals we have on offer."
