Fiat expect to axe up to 10,000 jobs at GM Europe factories if it wins control of the business. While improving its offer for the European arm of the struggling US car maker, Fiat said there would have to be economies. An announcement about Germany's preferred bidder for Opel, which would trigger massive federal support for the company, could come later today. Gary Savage is the new Managing Director for Citroen UK effective from 16 June, following the promotion of Xavier Duchemin to Head of Marketing and Communications in Paris. He is the first Brit to hold the job in 70 years and brings with him a wealth of UK and European Sales experience, having been most recently Head of Marketing and Brand Development for Audi in Russia, and then previously in the UK in a variety of senior roles including Head of Sales and Marketing within Volkswagen group's UK operations. Volkswagen and Chinese car maker BYD have agreed to jointly work on developing hybrids and electric vehicles powered by lithium batteries. BYD is short for "Build Your Dreams" and the deal would speed up VW's penetration of the Chinese market. The memorandum of understanding between Volkswagen and BYD will explore the options for partnership in the area of hybrids and electric vehicles powered by lithium batteries. The Honda Jazz has recently broken the 500,000 sales mark in Europe. The Jazz caused a sensation when it was launched in 2002 and the new Jazz will go into production at Honda UK Manufacturing Swindon plant in September.
