Cardiff Council is backing sustainable transport charity Sustrans ‘Change Your World' week and will be encouraging residents of Cardiff to sign up and change their world.

Sustrans is asking people to make one less car journey during the Change the World Week which takes place between 29 June and 4 July 2009.

By logging on to www.changeyourworld.org.uk you can promise to swap just one car journey in favour of a walk, a cycle ride or to travel by public transport instead.

If everyone in Britain made one less journey a week it would reduce car travel by at least 10 percent, which would mean an annual saving of almost 7m tonnes of carbon dioxide *

Cardiff Council is committed to reducing carbon emissions and to being more sustainable. The city was recently announced as Wales' first ‘Sustainable Travel City' under the Welsh Assembly Government's Sustainable Travel Town initiative. The Sustainable Travel City programme aims to provide enhanced bus travel around the city centre, and improved cycling and walking routes to encourage people to consider using more sustainable transport.

The Council will be introducing a number of other sustainable travel options for residents and commuters, including a Park and Ride service at Pentwyn. The Pont y Werin pedestrian/cycle bridge will also open in 2010, completing the bay cycle path and linking the Cardiff Bay International Sports Village with Penarth.

The Council supports car and journey sharing with its CarShare2Cardiff journey share scheme - www.carshare2cardiff.com - which allows employees of member organisations to log on and find out if they can share a journey to work with a work colleague.
