Used Car Expert, the car buyers advice magazine,
is urging motorists to shop around before buying a used car as the UK's top
selling models, the Ford Fiesta, and Ford Focus, are now significantly cheaper
in Wales than the national average price.
With the government
committed to offering discounted new cars through the recently implemented
scrappage scheme, many retailers are now being forced to reduce their margins
and drop prices as they struggle to sell used stock of some of the country's
most popular models, in a bid to remain profitable.
Research
undertaken by Used Car Expert, which checks over 810,000 prices every month,
and the only guide to monitor and report regional prices to help get motorists
a better deal on the forecourt, has revealed that consumers should not take
their eye off of the ball, because by buying used instead of new, Welsh
motorists can make even bigger or similar savings to the £2,000 reduction off
of new models under the scrappage scheme.
Those opting for a 2007 1.4-litre
Ford Fiesta will come away with a car nearly £2,200 cheaper than the national
average of £7,593, giving drivers a much welcomed saving of around 29%.
A two year old
1.8-litre Ford Focus Titanium with 15,000 miles on the a clock, a popular
model, especially with families, is another car offering a significant
discount, with around £2,500 off of the average national sticker price of
£8,595 on the road.
Matthew
Tumbridge, Editor of Used Car Expert said, "With many retailers relying on used
car sales to bolster their bottom line at a time when buying new has been cast
into the limelight, now is the time for motorists to grab a bargain and take
advantage of the lower prices in the region. Those who do their research and
shop around will be rewarded with the biggest savings when petrol prices are
back over £1 per litre and when the wallets of motorists are feeling the
pinch."
