A nationwide study of over 1,600 people has found that in the eyes of the British female public, there is no ‘manlier' job than working as a mechanic, closely followed by being a fireman.

A study commissioned by leading UK motor product company Nulon of 1,631 people has found that of all the occupations in the country, British women consider mechanics the ‘manliest'.

The top 10 ‘manliest' professions as judged by UK women are :

1.   Mechanic - 32pc
2.   Fireman - 26pc
3.   Oil rig worker - 24pc
4.   Butcher - 21pc
5.   Soldier - 19pc
6.   Farmer - 15pc
7.   Builder - 15pc
8.   Plumber - 13pc
9.   Rugby player - 10pc
10. Electrician - 8pc
Soldiers, butchers, firemen, oil rig workers and plumbers all feature in the top 10 list of ‘manliest' jobs in the UK, commissioned by additives and lubricants company www.Nulon-UK.com, the company behind engine starter product ‘Start Ya Bastard'.

Respondents were asked to select jobs from a list of 40 professions they felt were most ‘manly'.

Nearly a third of the women who participated in the study, 32pc, feel that mechanics typify manliness, followed by firemen, whom 26pc of women said were the ‘manliest' workforce in the UK.

Commentator Hope Alexander thinks there is a very good reason why mechanics are preferred over firemen, "Mechanics are no doubt preferable to women due to the fact that they are able to wear pretty lingerie without elevated risk of having it melt to
their bodies, unlike fire fighters who are well known for singing their delicates.

“One should also consider that cars and other items of machinery break down far more often than houses catch on fire. ”
