Welsh challenge for Bangers ‘Blockbusta’
publication date: Aug 14, 2009
 | | | Welsh drivers are gearing up for one of the toughest events in motorsport – the Blockbusta meeting for National Bangers.
Peter Wake, of Llandysul, leads the challenge from Wales, and is
preparing a formidable Volvo 240 Estate for the hard-hitting,
full-contact race meeting at St Day in Cornwall, on 30 August.
He will be joined by Swansea’s Tim Gardiner for the meeting, which
offers £2,000 in prize money and attracts drivers from all over the UK.
Wake, known as “Bungle” to race fans, is chairman of Preseli Motor
Club, which runs regular grass track events, for motor bikes, quad
bikes, cars, and even vans.
His visit to Cornwall and the faster tarmac track is a chance to
showcase bigger, more powerful machinery. In the past, he has raced a
Daimler, a Lexus, and even a Rolls Royce.
“It’s a long trip to Cornwall, but we combine it with a bit of a
holiday, and it’s always a great event,” said Wake, who is used to
driving even bigger vehicles, as a long-distance lorry driver.
Blockbusta, organised by leading oval track promoters Autospeed, is
open to bangers of any engine size, as long as they are prepared to the
national banger standards of the Oval Racing Council International.
“We only have a few meetings each year for unlimited bangers,” said
Crispen Rosevear of Autospeed. “Blockbusta is without doubt one of the
highlights of the season for drivers and spectators alike.
“It’s great to welcome drivers from Wales, and we love to see supporters making the trip too.”
The meeting takes place at the United Downs Raceway, St Day, near
Redruth, on Sunday August 30 from 1pm, and overnight camping is
available.
The event also features saloon stock cars and Ministox. Information is available at www.autospeed.co.uk or 01872 271199.
