 | Glanusk estate, near Crickhowell played host to
the penultimate round of the Britpart MSA British Cross Country
Championship over the weekend and a thrilling battle eventually saw
reigning champions Richard Kershaw and Graham Broadbent tighten their
grip on the 2009 crown.
Selwyn Kendrick and his
championship organising team took advantage of the extensive network of
roads on the estate to create an exciting new route that differed from
the one tackled by the crews when they previously visited the venue in
May. Sunday’s rain produced an additional challenge with the slick
conditions seeing several crews taking unplanned detours.
Saturday’s
stages saw Kershaw in second place just 8 seconds behind their closest
championship rivals, Tim Dilworth and Anthony Brinkman. But Sunday’s
third stage resulted in disaster for the Flintshire based duo as broken
steering launched them into the trees at 70mph.
Although both
crew members emerged unscathed from the high speed accident they
rapidly slid down the leader board, allowing Kershaw and Broadbent to
claim a comfortable win. With just the final round in Yorkshire to go
the Huddersfield duo are now odds on favourites to retain their title
on home ground.
Dilworth and Brinkman’s misfortune allowed Dan
Lofthouse and Jonny Koonja to follow up their victory in the previous
round at Sweet Lamb with an excellent second place while third position
went to Steven Smith.
Meanwhile, initial planning has already
begin for one of Britain’s leading motor sport championships to return
to Glanusk in 2010, with the intention being that it will form part of
an all new Welsh Off Road Show, attracting visitors to the area from
all over Britain. | | | | | | |
