The first full day of Wales Rally GB saw the lead
yo-yo between Sébastien Loeb and Jari-Matti Latvala but it was World Champion
Loeb who held the advantage when they returned to Cardiff Bay last night. Latvala slipped to sixth on the final stage of the day after suffering a
puncture, the consequence of a misted windscreen restricting vision. That left Petter Solberg in second place, just 1.8s
behind Loeb despite feeling he had lost up to 15 second with the car jumping
out of gear in the afternoon stages.
Sébastien Ogier is in third place a further 1.8s
seconds back as he battles it out with Solberg and Latvala for the runners up
spot in the World Championship. With Mikko Hirvonen lying fourth in his Focus,
Spanish Citroen driver Dani Sordo completes the top 5. Carmarthen co-driver Gareth Roberts lies 17th
overall and 5th in class despite he and Irish driver Craig Breen
having to contend with a bodywork damaging puncture and a small fire in their
Fiesta.
There were problems too for Tom Cave, the young
Aberdovey driver failing to complete the final two stages of the day after
breaking a track control arm on his Proton Satria (left). He will rejoin the rally
tomorrow under Superrally rules.
Meanwhile 17 year
old Aberangell driver Osian Pryce and co-driver Iestyn Williams from Dolwyn
lead their class in their Fiesta (left).
Top placed Welsh driver is Jason Pritchard of
Builth Wells. He and Swansea born co-driver Robbie Durrant lie in 26th
place overall despite a spin on the opening stage of the day.
As the competitors today head for the tarmac Epynt
military ranges, along with further gravel forest stages, a number of additional
Welsh drivers will join the field as the two day National rally gets underway.
