Tour Britannia historics in WalesA selection of the most desirable cars in the world will be visiting Wales over the next few days to compete one of the UK's most exclusive motor sport events, Tour Britannia. And such has been the welcome received by the organisers, Wales has gone from being primarily a venue for overnight rest halts to forming a major part of the tour's route. Now in its seventh year, Tour Britannia has established itself as the UK's premier Race Tour, primarily designed for historic cars, particularly those built before 1981. All cars follow the same scenic route over the three days, on quiet rural roads, with visits to a race track each day and stages at stately homes and other notable venues along the route. Also reminiscent of racing and rallying of the Fifties and Sixties, the social side is not forgotten - as competitors can relax after an exhilarating day's motoring and enjoy the unique camaraderie in convivial and luxurious surroundings at both the HQ Clubroom and other carefully chosen dinners. Preparing for this week's tour, event organiser Alec Poole commented, "When we originally drafted our route, we only intended to do one stage in Wales at Caerwent, while our thoughts were to centre the bulk of the event the other side of the Severn in South Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Somerset and North Devon. But such was the reception received from the Welsh Assembly Government and other organisations, such as Forestry Commission Wales and Landmarc, as well as the management teams at Pembrey Circuit, Bryn Bach Park and The Celtic Manor Resort, the whole of Friday's route is now within Wales. "Our competitors then head into the West Country on Saturday, including two visits to Castle Combe Circuit before returning to the Celtic Manor via a stage at Caerwent. They return to Caerwent on Sunday morning before heading through the Cotswolds to the finish at Silverstone." Although there are no spectator facilities at Caerwent on Saturday or Sunday, spectators will be able to see the cars in action at Pembrey Circuit from around 11am on Friday, with admission free of charge. With the entry list of more than 70 cars, including Ferraris, Bentleys, Porsches, Aston Martins and Jaguars along with Shelby Cobras and Mustangs, boasting a total value running into nine figures, this is one event where the cars are very much the stars. |
