Volkswagen and Volvo lead the way in security for owners
The winning vehicle manufacturers in the 2011 British Insurance Vehicle Security Awards saw Volkswagen UK scooping the overall manufacturer award for cars for the second year in succession with every variant in 11 separate model ranges satisfying the manufacturer awards selection criteria.
Vauxhall Motors UK won best overall van manufacturer for the first time, fully compliant with five separate model ranges. BIVSA is supported by UK insurers, the UK government through the Home Office and the Department for Transport as well as other organisations including What Car? magazine and the AA. With 21 separate awards for cars and vans, BIVSA is seen as the pinnacle for vehicle manufacturers in terms of recognition of their work in making vehicles more secure and reducing vehicle crime. The awards also represent an opportunity for manufacturers to demonstrate to their customers the efforts they are making in minimising the disruption and anxiety caused by being a victim of crime, and additionally in the case of vans, safeguarding their customer's livelihoods. This is of huge value in a climate of continuing austerity when it would be easy to lower standards. Despite market conditions, the best performing vehicle manufacturers are continuing to put a big emphasis on designing out crime with the number of model ranges fully compliant with the BIVSA criteria either remaining stable or increasing in numbers year on year. New winning cars this year included What Car?'s Car of the Year, the Audi A1 in the City Car/Supermini category, the Volvo C30 in the Family Car category and the Volkswagen Sharan in the Large MPV category. Meanwhile, new winners in the Van categories included the Volkswagen Amarok, the Land Rover Discovery 4 and the Nissan Primastar. This year's ceremony featured additional recognition for the most secure manufacturer in more than one country with the introduction of a new ‘International Vehicle Security Award'. This award reflects both the excellent work of Thatcham's Vehicle Security team in improving vehicle security standards in international markets and the desire of the Swedish insurance industry represented by TFF (Trafik försäkrings föreningen) to make this happen. Volvo were announced as the winner of this inaugural award with 100% compliance to the demanding BIVSA criteria for all their models sold in both the Swedish and UK markets. |
